Selaco is being developed by Altered Orbit Studios and released into early access in 2024. The game is built on a modified version of the GZDoom engine, and after seeing the game, this may be one of the most impressive things about it. Set in a space station in the year 2255, the main character is awakened in a hospital within the station when a force of armored aliens attack and you are forced to fight your way through to find other survivors.
The game is available from Steam very reasonable price and is expected to continue to be iterated on over time, with the developer having an additional two episodes and other game modes coming in the future.
Why should this game be played?
This game has a lot of great things going for it. From the gun-play to the detailed environments full of interactable elements and secrets. It's a mix of half-life, F.E.A.R and Doom, wrapped into a package that looks and plays like a modern game. While still in early access, there is plenty of content available to get immersed in, and to build the anticipation towards more updates.
This isn't your typical Doomlike game, you will not be stuck into monster closets with hordes upon hordes of monsters coming at you. Instead, battles are pieced out as you progress through the station, with squads of enemies regularly coming across your path. The soldiers work together too, flanking and communicating with one another while searching for you. Using strategy, whether that be a full frontal assault or sneaking from corner to corner to pop out with a well timed shotgun blast is what will get you through these encounters.
Between the combat encounters, there is lots of time to explore the detailed world. Much of the story and worldbuilding is doled out through datapads that are found, and the environments themselves. You will come across factories making medkits, warehouses, outdoor spaces and offices - packed with detail and secrets to find.
As the game progresses, the arsenal of weapons is unlocked, with many shooter staples being present. All guns have a great feel and sound to them, and beyond just the weapons themselves, there is a satisfying upgrade mechanic which provides some player agency. Each weapon has a defined tactical use, whether its the shotgun for up-close frontal assaults or the pistol for sneaky headshots, there is lots of variety here.
Beyond the story mode, there is additional replayability in the game. A randomizer mode remixes the mechanics, enemies and other settings in existing levels to add the unexpected into other playthroughs. If deathmatch arenas are more interesting, an incursion mode is slated to be included in the future, pinning the player against an endless wave of enemies in an arena.
It will be very exciting to see where this game goes, with only the first of three planned episodes being released for early access, it's well worth the money now and will only get better as time goes on.
Where to get the game
The game is available through Steam currently, with the developer hoping to also have GoG carry the game when possible. Early access can be purchased for around $25 USD, with regular sales taking 30% off of that price.
