Released in 2025, Megabonk is a Roguelike developed by Vedinad. The game is a play on the formula popularized by Vampire Survivors, but set in a procedurally generated 3D world. Combat is automated, with players growing more and more powerful as the game progresses through a series of random upgrades. Much like Vampire Survivors, certain builds and playstyles can be leaned into to create some truly havoc inducing moments.
Why should this game be played?
This game pulls all the feel good inducing levers in a masterful way. Depending on how deep a run goes, games can last a few minutes to almost an hour - allowing for the perfect jump in / jump out gameplay, and even during shorter games some form of progression can be made. The game has 20 unlockable characters, with varying playstyles. Many of which are unlocked through completing a specific challenge or playing through the levels in a specific way. This is one layer of the numerous challenges available in the game, and is part of why Megabonk can really get it's hooks in you. Each play session isn't a straight line, players can choose to work on some challenges over others, or do one specific run to unlock something to be used next time. It's a bit of open ended progression that can neatly fit into whatever feels interesting during that particular play session.
In addition to the characters, there are 29 weapons and 29 tomes in the game, with many requiring specific challenges completed in order to unlock. After progressing through the game somewhat, players can pickup 4 weapons and 4 tomes per game to complete a build, with many different combinations and synergies. Some weapons are focused on single target damage, while others will do less damage but provide AoE coverage. Tomes will boost a specific stat for the player or effect the behavior of weapons in some specific way, whether it be attack speed increase, additional projectiles or straight up boosting of damage - they are a welcome and necessary addition to your arsenal.
There is much more to say about the progression and the interlocking systems that all come together to drive the "just one more run" feeling that Megabonk brings to the table. If this type of game interests you, the best way to find out is to give it a try and get sucked in.
Where to get the game
The game is available through Steam. Early access can be purchased for around $9 USD, with regular sales taking 25% off of that price.
