Loop Hero is a roguelike developed by Four Quarters studio and published by Devolver Digital in 2021. The game was originally born out of the idea of creating a "zero player" game, where the character is not driven by the player but instead the player is focused on effecting the environment around the character as it travels on a set path. Originally created as a small concept by a single developer at Four Quarters, and then later refined during a game jam in 2019 - the idea of a character travelling in a never-ending but always changing loop evolved into a very fun and engaging game.
Why should this game be played?
This game is built on a simple premise and then layered with levels of complexity through it's various systems and interactions. Starting off, you have a small sprite travelling on a randomly generated path in a loop, surrounded by void of black tiles. Your character progresses forward automatically, with a bar at the top of the screen denoting the passing of time. The board is populated with a single enemy type - the lowly slime. Once your character reaches an enemy, an auto-battler starts, with blows being traded back and forth based on an attack cycle. Upon defeat, the enemy may give up a card or a piece of equipment. At this point, this is where the depth of the game starts to show itself.
The black void surrounding the loop is your opportunity to lay down the cards received from enemies, creating spawn points for various creatures, buffing your character or increasing difficulty for the hope of better loot or powers down the road. There are lots of different interactions between card combinations, many which can be found organically or through trial and error. Similarly, the equipment system has various stats and levels which present another layer of choice and agency when equipping your character for the battles ahead.
Throughout this adventure, the main goal is to place enough cards to fill up the progress bar and eventually spawn that levels boss. Defeating this boss will move you on to the next level and grant a good chunk of rewards to be used in the town between excursions, which serves as a meta-progression point, allowing you to buff your character, unlock new characters or cards, and other rewards.
Overall the game looks simple from the surface but contains a depth of complexity that will grab anyone who enjoys strategy or RPG games. Playing for a little bit and seeing the satisfying game loop will have you wondering if you have time for just one more run... and then maybe one more.
Where to get the game
The game is available on Steam and GoG and is regularly sold for under $15 USD, with sales bringing the price down to 75% of that every few months.
