Orginally conceived as a Doom mod in 1997 by Leon Zawada and Simon Rance, the mod was never finished but the idea lived on. Released in 2019 by Indefatigable studio founded by the afformentioned modders, Amid Evil is a love letter to the games that came before, all while bringing interesting new ideas to the table.

The game is available from both Steam and GoG at a very reasonable price and is well worth it for the creativity it brings to the genre alone.

Why should this game be played?

This game is a love letter to the FPS genre, taking inspirations from games like Doom, Heretic, and Quake. It's a fast paced romp through seven totally different worlds, with colorful visuals and lots of verticality. While some enemy and level design can be frustrating at points, overall the game delivers on the fast paced fantasy themed FPS experience that it promises.

Across the different worlds, the player will traverse 4 levels in each world. With three proper levels, and a fourth culminating in a unique boss fight before heading back to the level selection. Through these episodes, seven weapons are provided, all with various use-cases. There are some standouts in the world and weapon design as well, where new ideas show through. One of the coolest weapons in the game is the Star of Torment a mace weapon which throws spiked crystals at enemies, impaling them to the walls. Additionally, players will collect enemy souls of varying sizes for each enemy killed, powering up an ultimate ability which provides different weapon effects while active.

There is a bit of keycard hunting across levels, but not to the level that games like Doom had. Also, some enemy varieties can be very annonying - especially those that move in really unpredictable patterns, as it can be tricky to get a lock on. While there are some small letdowns here and there, this game still shines really bright in terms of fun factor and creativity.

Amid Evil is regularly sold for around $20 USD on both Steam and GoG, with sales bringing the price down to 50% of that every 6 weeks or so.

Expansion Pack

The Black Labyrinth expansion for Amid Evil was released in 2023 and received good reviews across major sites. The expansion adds ten new levels, new enemies, and two new weapons (exclusive to the expansion levels)

Modding

Unfortunately, since the game is made in the UE 4 engine, it's very hard for the developers to provide mod support. This has been acknowledged by the developers in a Steam forum post but doesn't appear that anything has come of it since.
